The ‘HeForShe Movement’, which the United Nations Women’s Unit (UN Women) called on everyone, especially men and boys, to be an advocate of change for gender equality, carries out important works in Turkey. Kerem Bürsin, the Turkish spokesperson for the movement, which was supported by famous names from the world of arts and sports, as well as heads of state and hundreds of private sector leaders from all over the world.

Kerem Bürsin supported the ‘HeForShe Movement’ with the words, “I no longer laugh and react to sexist jokes,” in a statement on social media last month. Known for his sensitivity on this issue, the actor became the Turkey spokesperson of the “HeForShe Movement”, which the United Nations Women’s Unit (UN Women) called on everyone, especially men and boys, to be an advocate for change and take action for gender equality.

Kerem Bürsin, who came together with the press and young people at the organization held on Friday, December 10, explained his thoughts on this meaningful task given to him with the following words:

“As men, we must walk arm in arm with women on the road to gender equality. We must get rid of the sexist roles such as “You are a man, do not cry”, “You are a woman, do not work”, and we must unite for an equal and fair future. Questioning and transforming our masculinity roles and privileges, what we men need to do to prevent gender-based discrimination and inequality. Unless we can achieve this, we cannot talk about an equal and just society. At a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has deepened inequalities, having such an important title gives me both great pride and an important responsibility.”

Gender inequality is not just a women’s problem; It is a human rights issue that affects the entire society. Men are both the subject and the de facto part of the solution in the gender equality debate. HeForShe offers an innovative and inclusive approach to mobilizing men as partners with women in the fight against gender equality.
