Education: Graduated from Karadeniz Technical University, Faculty of Architecture. Afterwards, he completed his master’s degree in City and Regional Planning at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Department of Architecture.
First step into acting: He started his television adventure in 2004 with the TV series “Tangle”.
Which project did it shine with? In 2007, he attracted attention with the character of “Osman”, which he portrayed in the TV series “Karayılan”.
Mindset: Feels nervous about shooting scenes without proper preparation. “Everything is not always written in the script, there are nuances that you have to find out. At the end of the day, this is a design process that you create with the director and the scriptwriter. I have a habit from the theatre. Shooting the scene without being properly prepared makes me nervous. Before we go on stage in the theatre, we withdraw into our own inner world; this is leaving the body to the game. It’s very difficult to do something this intense on set, but at least you need to be prepared beforehand. I do not count the memorization, of course memorization will be, but what he said and why, before and after, what are the graphics of the scene, what are the peak points, the scene must be deciphered. Then you need to give yourself time to get rid of the excess and enter the scene cleanly. I don’t want last-minute interventions for costume, hair and make-up. I say, ‘Do whatever you have to do before the recording and let me go’. I prefer to enter the stage with a peace of mind. Also, working on the stage with my partner and recording works very well.”
First feature film: Berdel / Atıf Yılmaz
His outlook on life: Architecture and acting, both are indispensable in his life. He also thinks that everyone should study acting. “I learned to live with the two of them. Theater started when I was studying architecture. Acting education is an education that I believe every person should receive. It is the discovery of one’s self, body and potential, gaining empathy and developing perception. I did not start my acting education with a desire to be an actor. It was an educational process and a good experience for this person to tinker with himself. Besides, it has helped me a lot in architecture. I’ve learned to live with both and got used to it. It feels like I’m going to limp if I leave one, and the two feed off each other.”
His perspective on business life: He states that he understands the characters he acts in the TV series and movies very well, and that he almost lived and adopted the character. He also teaches acting. “The first thing I say to my students is this; ‘Do the acting for yourself and make it your priority to be happy while doing it. If you are honest on stage, if you feel good, the audience will take it right away.’ Acting is not done for someone else or to show someone. It is something that a person has to come to terms with himself completely and end there. You embellish it with various techniques, develop it, take it to the next level, but it is basically an individual action that you do for yourself. For this reason, it is a process that requires great dedication, discipline and of course luck. It’s also very ruthless, it’s hard to catch up again once you start missing your profession. You have to keep it alive and nurturing it all the time. It is a profession that requires at least as much discipline as engineering.”
Who is his favorite architect in Turkey? He loves republican architecture very much. “Seyfi Arkan is one of my favorite representatives of this period. He is one of the pioneers of modern architecture in Turkey. Seyfi Arkan has made studies on human life styles, values and behaviors and interpreted them in his architecture. At this point, a serious connection can be established between architecture and theater. Because the architect designs the space and the actor designs the people in that space.”
