Family: Her mother is from Cyprus and her father is from Uşak. “I am the child of a very lucky family. Because both sides have lived very unrelated lives and they have come. My mother is the child of an island who has seen the Cyprus war and lived for a long time under the British colony. Her upbringing is very aristocratic. My father is a land person from the Ayvacık village of Uşak. The two of them come together at METU Chemistry Department. I am the child of a beautiful love.”
Childhood years: She clearly decides what she wants to do in middle sophomore year. “There were rehearsals for Keşanlı Ali Epic at Bornova Anatolian High School. I went and said I think I want to do this job. I was involved in theater activities throughout school. I won the Department of Public Administration and Political Science at 9 Eylül University. There, I entered the Theater Department of Amateur Economic Actors. When I was in the third year, I won the conservatory department of Hacettepe University. I started playing the piano at the age of four, but this side of me never came to the fore. My family wanted me to study music. My father studied music in Uşak, my mother is Cypriot and plays the piano. My grandfather is a graduate of the village institute and plays instruments such as violin and mandolin. I can say that every member of my family is an amateur musician, they are very talented in this regard. My brother is a guitarist and he trained for it. I didn’t go to school, but I can play a few instruments. I also love to sing and compose. By the way, I sang many times in cartoons. In addition, I attended the award ceremony of the theater magazine as the ‘Best Play Music’ nominee. I composed the music for Bab-ı Tiyatro’s play “The Marvelous Adventures of Nonexistent Ayşe”. It was something I did with great enthusiasm. It is an honor for me to receive such a nomination.”
Education life: Graduated from Hacettepe University State Conservatory. After her graduation, she moved to Istanbul and worked in theaters such as Tiyatro Kedi, Tiyatro Oyun Evi and Oyun Atölyesi. Apart from her theatrical work, she took part in various movies and TV series and made voiceovers.
The turning point of her career: The TV series Muhteşem Yüzyıl was the turning point of her career. “I became known thanks to the Muhteşem Yüzyıl. I was not that well-known because I lead a mostly theater-oriented life. The audience knows all the characters very well, both because of the success of the work and the fact that it is watched so much. Since it is a historical project, it has become an extra research topic. On the way, people would come to me and say, “We know your fate, Ms. Gülfem.” I am very happy to be involved in this job, the team was also very good.”
The first step into acting: She started her television adventure in 2007 with the character of “Asiye”, which she portrayed in the TV series “Kara Yılan”.
Which project did it shine with? She attracted attention with the character of “Gülfem Hatun”, which she played in the TV series “Muhteşem Yüzyıl”.
Personality traits: Since her childhood, she has always asked herself philosophical questions such as “What are we doing?”, “Why are we here?” and “Why is there a thing called human?” “Then I discovered something in a musical I was playing; It was a Shakespeare musical and we talked about the process from birth to death of a person in the play. This game was one of the turning points in my current way of thinking. After all, you have to be aware that one day you will die and live accordingly and enjoy every moment. You will fight the battle you have to fight in life, but you will never give up on love. I started living by trying to pursue the beautiful and the good.”
Mindset: She pays attention to start the day with a smile, tries to think positively when her mood drops. “When I wake up tired in the morning, I always open my balcony door and go out to the fresh air and breathe deeply 10 times. I say ‘Oh what a beautiful life’. I always try to start the day with a smile. I really enjoy living. I always think that; Laughter and laughter are good things. If only I could prevent all the negativity in this world. I’m thinking, ‘I wish you could look at this life from the way I look at it’. In the meantime, there are things that I am sad about and worry about. When my mood is low, I always come out of the work by saying, “I was born once and now it happens once”. I’m not stuck on anything. If you think negative, it will be negative, I always think positive. That usually works great for me.”
Career plan: In addition to acting, she is interested in music, voice acting, and has voiced in more films, animations and TV series than she can remember. “I want to sing stories with stories like Barbra Streisand. It could also be an album of children’s songs. Halil Sezai insisted on saying ‘Let’s sing’ to me during the shooting of the movie ‘Çilek’. I also want to write plays, but they all require separate concentration and time.”
Dreaming of the Future: She dreams of the role she will play after every job and believes that the role has come to her.
How is it with social media? She’s very good with Instagram. She loves using it.
How she stays in shape: She pays great attention to what she eats and drinks. After suffering from reflux in 2002, she gained regular eating habits.
