Childhood years: There was a desire to be an actor as a child. “The stage has been the place where I felt good and peaceful since my childhood. Even when I was a child, I used to prepare tickets for the guests who came to the house saying, “Our show starts in 10 minutes”, and I used to make the show with the costumes I prepared myself. With a VHS camera my father brought home during high school, these tiny shows turned into short films and sketches I shot with my friends. Towards the end of high school, I was playing in private theaters and giving guitar lessons at an art center. When the university period came, my family thought that I would go to the Vienna University of Economics, but I had started at the conservatory. I think my family learned about the situation after 1 year, but they did not react at all, they were not surprised. So acting and music have always been a part of my life.”
Education life: Graduated from Vienna Conservatory. In addition to his identity as an actor and theater actor, he also worked as a casting director and assistant director.
The turning point of his life: His role in the TV series “Yargı” broadcast on Kanal D was a turning point in his life. Thanks to the series, it became known to a wide audience. “I can say with peace of mind that the series Yargı has been a turning point in my career, and it is a project that I really enjoy being in.”
The first step into acting: He started his acting adventure with the character of ‘Kuzey’, which he played in the Youth TV series ‘G.I.F.’ published on YouTube in 2018.
Which project did he shine with? He attracted attention with the character of “Engin” in the TV series “Yargı”.
Social: Jazz music lover spends most of his time with his instruments outside the set. “I am a big jazz fan. In fact, I always wanted to be a jazz musician. Most of the time I spend time with my guitar, instruments or my music library and headphones. You will definitely see me at most concerts. Besides, I love to cook, I am assertive. And of course walking is the most relaxing thing for me. In my free days, I walk for miles in nature or on the beach. Of course, provided I still have my headphones in my ears. “
Mindset: He has no tolerance for disrespect. “I certainly can’t stand people who are disrespectful and don’t love themselves. Because disrespect brings with it lies, insecurity and undesirable derivatives.”
Source of happiness: He is very happy to be a part of the series Yargı. “Great story, great script, great cast, great directors, and a great crew. I think these are the biggest factors in the success of the series. I also attribute the success to the constant high tempo of the series and its creative twists. As a viewer, I can say that we are longing for projects like the Judgment. Judgment also gives the audience a chance to generate ideas and theories, and presents an almost interactive story. In short, it respects the intelligence of the audience. And this of course does not go unanswered. The audience made the distinction between Onur Durmaz and Engin Tilmen very well, I am happy about that. “We got messages like ‘we hated Engin but we love you so much’.”
First feature film: Hakan Algül / Niyazi Gül Dörtnala
His outlook on life: The thing he values most in life is to smile. “One of the things I can’t give up is smiling, being able to smile, making you smile. Is it okay without laughing? Not without having fun. Of course, we can’t always find situations to smile about, but why not try?”
Perspective on business life: There are no rules in acting. “I don’t like rules. Of course, I respect moral structures, but it’s always fun to try new things, think about new characters and try to find new identities. Even though I can’t spare much time for theater, I think that I am a good theater audience. Before the pandemic, I used to go to the theater at every opportunity, watch, take my notes and enjoy watching. Unfortunately, I can’t watch games like I used to anymore. I haven’t acted in a theater play for a very long time. The script of The Yargı is magnificent, I think I read the first two parts in 1.5 hours without breathing. I hadn’t been this excited about a scenario in a long time, my eyes were filled with tears. I even found myself saying “Come on! Come on!” I found it while shouting like. Still, when the new script comes up, I shut myself up in the room, read it as if I was reading a book that I was eagerly waiting for as Onur, and then I start working again as Engin. I am a big fan of Sema Ergenekon’s pen and creativity. Therefore, I had no doubt that the project would be successful.”
Dreaming of the Future: He has so many roles he dreams of playing. “I enjoy everything I play, but I would love to play a fantasy character. In universes like “The Witcher” or “Lord of the Rings,” a sword-wielding character wouldn’t be bad. I have a serious sword fascination. I even have 6 years of professional fencing background and degrees. Other than that, it would be fun to play characters with a sociopathic mind, or to play a real-life person in a biographical story.”
How is he with social media: He can’t spend a lot of time on social media. “Actually, at one point, I don’t understand social media either. I don’t like to share my private life outside of work. But I can say that I spend much more time with the Yargı now than I used to.”
