FAMILY AND EDUCATION
Hülya Avşar was born in Edremit, Balıkesir. Her father, Celal Avşar, belonged to a Turkmen family that had migrated from Kayseri-Pınarbaşı to Kars-Ardahan, while her mother, Emral Hanım, was from Edremit and of Cretan and Yörük descent. Her childhood and youth were spent in various provinces due to her father’s civil service career.
CAREER BEGINNINGS
Avşar’s career began in 1982 with the role of Dilaşub in TRT’s series “İntibah.” In 1983, she was named winner of Bulvar Newspaper’s “Kâinat Güzellik Yarışması” beauty pageant, though her crown was revoked after it emerged she was married. That same year, she made her major cinematic breakthrough starring alongside Fikret Hakan and Salih Güney in the film “Haram.”
BREAKTHROUGH
Avşar represented Turkish cinema on the international stage by winning “Best Actress” at the Moscow International Film Festival for her role as Dilber in the 1993 film “Berlin in Berlin.” In music, her 1995 album “Yarası Saklım” sold 1.1 million copies, making it one of the best-selling releases of its era, and in 2000 she was named “Best Female Singer of the Year” by Kral TV.
