Famous actress Merve Dizdar was awarded the best actress award for her role in director Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s film Kuru Otlar Üzerine. The actress, who was quite surprised when her name was announced at the award ceremony and attracted attention with her speech on the podium, made our country proud.
For the first time, a Turkish actress won an award at the festival, which was held for the 76th time in Cannes, France. This award, in which Merve Dizdar’s successful performance was appreciated, was recorded in history as a first for Turkey.
The actress, who thanked Nuri Bilge Ceylan and everyone who supported her, also drew great attention with her speech on the podium:
“The character of Nuray, whom I portrayed in the movie, is a woman who struggles for what she believes in and for her existence, and who has to pay a price for this cause. I would like to work long and hard to get to know and understand her. But unfortunately, being a woman in the geography where I live requires knowing the feelings of Nuray and Nurays by heart since the day I was born.
All my sisters who took action, risking everything for this cause and not giving up hope no matter what, and all the strugglers waiting to experience the good days they deserve in Turkey, in order to strengthen the struggle of Nuray and women like her with this award. I dedicate it to the spirits.”
